I’m all about advocating for planting little gardens indoors, whether they be little kitchen herb gardens or indoor jungles. However, if you have a patio, or a small patch outside that you can use to plant some herbs or veggies, you totally should! I have a little hanging garden out in my patio. Not having a lot of space or light, I had to go with some slightly more creative solutions to be able to grow anything.
Whatever your setup may be, however, you may think July is a little late to plant anything in your garden. Not true! Here is a list of herbs and veggies you can sow today that will thrive in your summer garden even if you only plant them in July :)
These are plants you can sow indoors/outdoors in pots so you can comfortably move them indoors when colder weather strikes. In the meantime, let them enjoy being outside to take advantage of all the light so they can grow big and strong before you have to move them indoors!
These are fast-growing plants that you can sow all summer long:
-
Lettuce and Salad Leaves can be sown about once a month
-
Fast-growing carrots
-
Coriander
-
Dill
-
Parsley
-
Beans
Fall/Winter veggies can be sown now so that they can be ready for harvest in the cooler months. That includes:
-
Beets: Beets are fall/winter veggies, so planting them now means that they’ll be planted in time for fall.
-
Corn Salad
-
Endive
-
Raddichio
-
Turnips
Finally, if you live in a warmer climate, you can also get away with planting these now as well:
-
Summer Squash
-
Tomatoes
-
Melons
That’s the overview for July planting. But that’s not even it! August has its own batch of herbs and veggies to plant, so keep your little garden going and make sure you’re staying up to date!
